Secondary School Admissions

Applying for a secondary school

When new parents come to visit our schools, whether for Reception year or coming from other primary schools, we are often asked which secondary school we feed into.

Primary schools do not 'feed' into any single school.

Ultimately, the choice of secondary school that you apply for, is up to you.

Families can apply based on the criteria that are most important to them but, as with primary school admissions, there is no guarantee you will get assigned your first choice and you are advised to state your preferred second and third options.

Once you have decided on the schools you wish to apply for, you can find information on how to apply on the local authority website for the area in which the school is situated.

In our area, this could be:

                              West Sussex:       Click here

                              Hampshire:          Click here

                               Surrey:                Click here

Our local secondary schools

The secondary schools that many, but not all of our children transfer to after year six are:

                            Bohunt School:      Bohunt School

    The Petersfield School (TPS):     TPS

Midhurst Rother College (MRC):     MRC

Bo  Bourne Community College:     Bourne CC

There are several other secondary schools in the area and beyond, that you are free to apply for. Please bear in mind that some schools have their own admission policies. Church Voluntary Aided Schools, Foundation Schools, Free Schools and Academies are ‘own admission authority schools’, responsible for determining their own admission arrangements. Bohunt School, for example, has it's own admission authority.

Important Dates

Applications can be submitted to the relevant local authority at the beginning of September when your child starts year 6, although it is advised that you begin your search whilst they are in year 5.

The application deadline for secondary schools is usually the end of October. There is facility for late applications under certain circumstances (stated on the local authority websites.)

There are no entry exams for any of the state schools. End of year 6 SATS do not determine whether your child is accepted into a school or not.

The 'offer day' is the beginning of March. This is when you will find out by email or letter, which school you have been assigned.

If you are not happy with the school that you are offered, there is an appeals process that operates between April and August.

Further information and more specific dates will be on your local authority's website (see links above.)
